Women are the builder of family as well as the nation. From household chores to nation building process they have contributed immensely to the society. But still the societal mindset has not changed and look them as inferior.

From domestic violence to discrimination in entering temples, restrictions in dressing, not allowing them to attend school as in radical Muslim countries, stigmatizing for their natural biological process, sexual harassment, they witness the cruelty of patriarchal and parochial society.

The Indian government has come up with various women centric schems and acts like PM-MVY, Beti Padao Beti Bachao, abolition of dowry, Sexual Harassment at Workplace Act of 2013, etc.
But these provisions have not proven effective at ground.
Apart from safeguarding women there is need to empower them economically, socially and politically.
As a first step the parliament should pass the pending Bill on providing reservation to women in Central legislatures.
Rwanda has the highest percentage of female legislators.
They should be allowed to pursue whatever profession they like and provide adequate safeguard in workplaces.
To lower the crime against women an active one stop centre should be established at every sub division.
To make household activities performed by women an economic activity and include it in the GDP calculation.
To extend maternity benefit to all women alone with government employees.
To aware the people about natural biological processes in women and not to stigmatize them.

The mandate of National Commission on Women should be expanded to rescue the women facing exploitation in both family and outside. There has to be well laid out policy to cover social, economical and political aspects to empower women.

mains questions :
“if you want to study , study after doing the rest of household chores” mother said to Meena .there are so many Meena who are not able to study due to preconceived notions by their families and societies .
even after having schemes like beti bachao beti padhao ,government fails to yield the desired results .no doubt women have reached space but the reality is that a lot of women are not able to reach even outside their homes .
Even after facing challenges from families and societies women continue to serve them in every best possible way . standing as a pillar in support of families and societies whenever asked for .
people need to understand that growth of women is complementary to growth of nation .there are various things that can be done in order to give what women really deserves .
At societal level: * people need to broaden their perspective and this could be started by teaching their children about concepts like women empowerment . because it is the young generation will make the difference .
At public place/ workplaces : making the environment conducive for women to work is another important factor that led to women empowerment .
for ex: in subordinate courts/high courts :conditions of toilets is very pathetic , it needs to be improved .
At government level : designing policies for women and also keeping check on its progress through technology and ensures that targeted beneficiaries are getting the benefits.
through awareness campaigns specially in backward areas ,and providing incentives to the families who are allowing their girls/women to continue their studies .
policies to formulate considering the pendency of cases in women related cases ; speedy trials for crimes against women .
holistic approach is needed for development of women status in every sphere of life keeping in mind that women are the real architect for society .

Answer-
“Who is a woman?”. A woman is someone’s daughter, wife, student, mother, sister, doctor, patient, friend and many more. There are many role a eoman plays in her life both inside and outside a family. It is correctly said that “women are too big to be owned by a single person cosidering the myriad of importance they bring to the world.” But it is also correct that they have not got the credit they deserve.
Condition of women in 21st century-
*tortured by men or her in laws (domestic violence)
*deprived of their rights.
*gender discrimination.
*sexual abuse.
*lack of education.
*dowry,rape, acid attack.
*femal foeticide.
*victim of patriarchal mindset.

Changes required–
*achieve gender equality.
*a safe environment for women
*equal access to education.
*women’s participation in every field.
*career choices.
*gender sensitisation.

Govt. schemes and policies which helped in empowering women are —
*SWACCHA BHARAT MISSION– due to
access to toilets and running water (especially during menstruation) , enrollment of girls in schools gone up hugely . It also helped in preventing rapes in rural areas.
PM MATREE VANDANA YOJANA– it helped in improving the health condition of women in or after pregnancy.
HAR GHAR JAL ( JAL JEEVAN MISSION)– it will also help in empowering women as they will not have to go a long distance to fetch water and so they will get more time to educate themselves or developing some skills.
OTHER INITIATIVES LIKE
BETI BACHAO BETI PADHAO
DOWRY ACT
SEXUAL HARASSMENT AT WORKPLACE PREVENTION ACT, 2013.
The need of the hour is to empower women not only socially , poltically but also economically. Disha Act of Andhra Pradesh, Smart Police initiative of UP, Smart Kitchen concepts could play a better role in empowering women. This is the right time to make the world aware of the fact that “THE FUTURE IS FEMALE”.

ONCE DR. BHIMRAO AMBEDKAR SAID THAT IF THE COUNTRYS WOMEN ARE NOT EDUCATED THEN THE DEVELOPEMENT OF THE NATION NOT CONSIDERED. BY THIS IF WE NOT GIVEN A PROPER STATUS TO THE WOMEN THEN THE DEV. NOT PROCEEDED
Women’s Role Inside
Women are the pioneers of nation.
Indian culture attaches great importance to women, comprising half of world’s population. According to a report of secretary general of United Nations, women constitute 50% of human resources, the greatest human resource next only to man having great potentiality.
As a Mother:
As a wife
As a Manager of Family Income

#Women’s role outside:
•Past events :
Role in indian national movement
•current event
Handling of covid – 19 pendemic in New Zealand

Events which shows that they have not got credit what they deserve :

•Current Saudi Arabia gives women freedom from male guardian .
• Daughter rights over property.
• Ban on entry of sabrimala temple
However, all these restrictions are now removed .

ROLE OF GOVERNMENT
1. Dowry act 1986 :punishment 304 -B of IPC
2. Beti bachao beti padhao
3. Sexual harassment at workplace act , 2013
4. Cruelty against women under section 498 A of IPC
5. POCSO for minor

way forward:
1. First of all , aware women about their rights .
2. special training given to the women for special purpose , where the people think that they are not fit .
3. self education and self defense to protect herself
4. Create a taskforce to check and observe offense against women such that they perform better in every field.
5. promote birth girl child .
6.set up the institution at every village level to guide and improve their ability in every sector
7.Provide financial support to every women to set up their own small industry

“The cruel irony of housework :People only notice when you don’t do it “-Daniel Raine.

Most of the schemes for women empowerment are envisaged with targets in economic output terms ignoring their social contributions from the time immemorial .A woman not only contribute to make his household a better place but also work for the welfare of society .

POINTS OF CONCERN-;

1- NITI Aayog report on state level progress working for SDG 5 revealed that all Indian states except Kerala and sikkim falls in red zone indicates poor condition of women .

2- #Me too campaign also got famous showing discrimination against women.

3- Household work got no recognition in GDP and no earning from that.

4- Women labour force participation rate has decreased from 36%-23% b/w 2005-2015.

5- Cases of Gender violence at both houses and work places .

WHAT CHANGES ARE NECESSARY-;

1-Social barriers like patriarchy must be given attention.

2- Unpaid household work should be taken into account.

3- Paternity leave- Men should be encouraged to avail these leaves to reduce the burden of child bearing particularly on women .

4- Inheritance rights should invoke for Women.

Government is trying hard for the upliftment of women through many initiatives like -;
1- Beti Bachao beti padhao,2-One stop centre scheme”sakhi “,3- StEP(Support to training and employment program. But still a lot to do for the enhancement of women status in the country .
As “If a man is educated he can work but if a woman is educated she will educate whole family.

The plight of women has continued since time immemorial,be it hitler seing them as producer if pure aryan child or sati and forced marriages in india, the world round the clock have seen women nothing more than care giving and support system.

What are the bottlenecks-
1)No political representation-only 25% of all parliamentarians are women the figure is more severe in india with 14%
2)in time use survey it was indicated that women put more time in caregiving and household work as compared to men-2.4 hours more
3) the pandemic has increased the voilence and pressure of work on women
4) huge job loss-where women are 11 times more unlikely to go back to work
5) resources in education and gender divide- if a family has only 1 mobile phone the proportion of giving it to study the male child is more
6) female foeticide and sex selective abortion -46 million missing females in india
7) The recent National Family Health Survey data reflect that the increasing levels of education have not offered a greater say in household decisions or freedom of movement outside the home to women.
8)pandemic has disrupted the efforts to clamp down child marriages with increased cases of millions of girl child pushed in this pitthole.

What needs to be done and what are govt efforts?

1) pm jan dhan yojna the money was sent in womens account more such schemes like universal basic income can be adopted
2 PM matru vandhna yojna for pregnant and lactating womens
3) poshan abhiyan for reducing stunting ,wasting ,and anemia in girls
4) for safety of women schemes like SHE box and POSCO act provides a hold for increasing crimes against womens
5) a push to higher education and science streams are needed which are becoming more male oriented ex sTEM scheme
6)more feminist theories like an oakaley etc can be studied and taught extensively
7) we need to focus on SDG 4 and 5 for education and gender equality
8) international initiatives
Covid-19 Global Gender Response Tracker is an initiative of UNDP and UN Women which shows that social protection and jobs response to the pandemic has largely overlooked women’s needs we need to adapt such tracker for india to know how on ground situations
9) maternity leaves should also be for mens so that a message is sent that mens are equally responsible for paternity

Way forward-in ancient times women in vedas held high place ,what is needed is more labour reforms, gender focused policies and changes actually in ground level so that women gets back the self esteem destroyed by the patriarchy. Thus it would not be wrong to revise the slogan given by dayanand saraswati-“go back to the vedas.”

Mains Answer –>

“Women is the companion of man gifted with equal mental capacities” – Mahatma Gandhi

Women have played vital role both inside & outside the household which can be traced back since Indian freedom struggle
but, In India being Patriarchal society, women’s role always been sidelined & ignored. This has decreased her status & her self confidence in public sphere

Reasons for not getting credit to women’s role –>
1. Patriarchal mindset considers women as incapable & weaker than man
2. Panchayat Pati at PRIs
3. Men heads & chairpersons in most of the institutions working for women – e.g. less number of women judge at court – lack of gender sensitisation
4. family restrictions over women’s social & economic participation – as matter of safety, family status, etc
5. no recognition to women’s household work (double burden) as contribution to GDP
6. Domestic violence – women remained soft target of man to show masculinity
7. Traditional stigmas & superstitious beliefs regarding women in rural societies

Steps to improve status & contribution –>
1. Empowering women – with increased employment opportunities
2. Increased age of marriage (21 yrs) – to allow her to get higher education & better decision regarding self status & role in society
3. Strengthening the institutions like NCW
4. increased employment under govt schemes like MGNREGA, more support to women SHGs, etc
5. increasing number of women judges in the SC & HCs for better handling of gender sensitive cases & speedy justice
6. Increase women representation in Parliament
7. Spreading awareness regarding women’s rights, women’s capacity & gender equality
8. steps for Gender sensitisation in every sector of the economy
9. Increase female labour force participation
10. Improved healthcare

According to IMF, women’s participation in every sector of economy can increase India’s GDP by 27%, therefore it becomes crucial to recognise potential
of women forming country’s half population to become $5tn economy

B.R. Ambedkar has said, “I measure the progress of a community from the progress that women has made”

The cruel irony of housework is- people only notice when you don’t do it.

India being a patriarchal society the role of women has always been ignored . As Women form about half of the population of the country, but their situation has been grim. For centuries, they have been deliberately denied the opportunities for growth in the name of religion and socio-cultural practices. This has decrease there status and self esteem in the public domain.

Reasons for not getting credit to women role-
1. Patriarchal System and gender stereotypes-sons are regarded as means of social security.
2.Educational Deprivation- the literacy rate of women much lower than men.
3. victim of domestic violence- discrimination and exploitation
4. Only Pink collar jobs available for women.
5. No recognition to Women’s household work- Unpaid domestic work ironically “hidden engine”.
that keeps economies, businesses, societies running and contributes significantly to individual
well being.

Steps to improve the status and contribution-
1. Recognize the value of unpaid work- as according to 2019 NSS Report In India, women spend 299 minutes a day on unpaid domestic services while men spend 97 minutes.
2. Investment in physical infrastructure- like clean water and sanitation, energy and public transport, LPG gas cylinders for cooking under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana etc.
3.More equitable childcare and maternity policies could help reduce the ‘motherhood penalty’.
4. Educate Women about their rights.
5.Empower women by generating more employment opportunities- as economic contribution of women in India’s GDP is only 17%.

Therefore the need of an hour is to strengthen women socially economically and politically.

I believe that the rights of women and girls are the unfinished work of the 21st century– Hillary clinton

Women have since the beginning of the time worked hard to earn the due respect they demanded but the very idea of thinking of women as a weaker sex have failed the great revolutions demanding nothing but equality. Nonetheless when given a chance women have always proved that they are no less than anyone be it the great wars or the industrial revolution.

The prejudice begins at home when the society classifies the home chores not even under the category of work which directly impacts the dignity of the major section of women who chose to nuture their families instead of working in a revenue generating sector, and this goes a long way with them becoming dependent on the males of the family and somehow loses her basic independence of choice and it doesn’t end here women who even work and though become financially independent the society isn’t much supportive there too. The workplace atmosphere further adds to the problem harassment at work place the restricting women to lesser powerful roles and the double stress of home and workplace adds to her difficulties. Though the constitution of all the democracies of the world and india in particular accepts with full grace the equality of all its citizens without discrimination and in the recent pasts many steps have been taken by the govts to bring a change by providing for equal pay, maternity benefits, strict action against workplace harrassment to name a few still a lot need to be done
Steps have even been taken to encourage and empower women to take greater leadership role which have shown excellent results with the SHGs, the resevations for women candidate in the local government elections, the one stop solution help centres the initiatives like “beti pdao beti bachao” the loans and schemes for girl child and the initiative for including them in science and technology research and studies have shown excellent results and though still have a long way to go but raise a hope that it is only going to become better.
The first step towards change is acceptance of a issue which as we look at these initiatives shows we already have done so now working together to make a whole, inclusive respectful global order achieving the SDG which includes women empowerment in the only way forward.

P.s sir if u read this, this is my very first attempt at a question.

Our Indian Constitution tells about Art 14,15,16 where written every one are equal in all respects. As we know women work inside and outside the house but they didn’t get as credit as they should get.But most of the orthodox family didn’t allow the women to work outside side, even many family didn’t give higher education to girls. In many family, teenage of girls they married them by which girls don’t full fill their dreams, their talent become waste. This are the reason which decline the women empower.

Women work outside the house:-
1.NGO:- Many women run NGO, which supports women empowerment so they can rise thier status and become independent.
2.Reserve seat for women on government job, so they can come out from the house and become inspiration for others girls.
3.Many women now a days participate in a politics that’s good, because they can reduce carruption because maximum women are ethical attitude.

Women work inside the house:-
Women work inside the house as a mother and sister without payment for love only. Women are the back born of the families.but they get treated as if servent, they didn’t respect as if they should given.

Way forward
1.Educate women so they can contribute more GDP to the nation.
2.Educate the society so they can change their mental and so they can’t discrimination between girl and boys.
3.Family should have maximum 2 children so they can give quality education.
