Democracy is the supreme power by the people, direct and indirect democracy recognises liberty, equality and fraternity of the citizens..
Due to the imbalance situation of environment, economic and technology disturbances in globally strata….
A) inequality.. Is seen as biggest threat to global democracy. eg: due to pandemic….specially in Health sector which causes of polarization.. & Poverty.
B) security.. Among democracy, the us is the most concerned about big tech 62℅ , but wariness last year.. Regulation of social media…
eg:incitement of riots through hateful post..
C) cyber crime.. Bullying or stalking, financial fraud, identify thefy.
eg: try to create Misimages of Mrs Obama..
To tackle all this should be taken measures to deals with these threats..
#Quad Nation should be strengthen their planning in trade ,security and climate change to control the inequality..
#Countries should be support and connect with G7 ideas to coordinating solution to major global issues..

In all digital system should be use full service internet security suite.

Democracy can be summarised as form of govt by the people and for the people. It gives maximum autonomy to the people ,elected by majority and run by representatives.
In emerging times there is tendancy of the major countries to turn to authoritarian rule ex Myanmar and china .The recent G7 summit discussed the hindrances and threat to the emerging democracies.some of them are-
1)rising authoritianism and militaty control over free led democracy
2)electoral interference
3)deep fakes circulation in covid times
4)economic coercion
5)manipulation of information
6)online harms
7) cyber attacks where USA being the biggest economy was hit the most
Example-nobellium,hafnium and solar winds
8)politically motivated internet shutdown focused on India- kashmir issue and ,CAA protests
9) clamping on freedom of speech and press

What can be done?
The economies in covid 19 have seen the biggest turnaround and major changes in political arena .G7 which was defunt after 2008 crises has taken a forward stance focusing on china authoritarian tendancy,BRI and origin of virus .some of the needed changes are-
1) economies to work in collaboration to fight the militarian rule coming up and should support democratic tendencies.
2)there should be a framework to check misinformation and deepfakes in social media handles
3)digital infrastructure should be strengthened the fight the imerging new form of warhead as cyber attack.
4)freedom of press and speech should be respected in all form as it is basis of many constitutions of the world
5)independent media beyond who is winning or loosing in elections to be promoted
6(use social media and other platform as a platform to put reliable information by various ministers so that citizens may not spread miss or incomplete information.
7) Find ways to meet others face-to-face to engage in conversations, not soapbox speeches and debates. Look at the “Living Room Conversation” movement that brings people together across political divisions. Their goal is to encourage “authentic, respectful conversations” to “strengthen relationships and advance understanding of the challenges, opportunities, and solutions before us.

Way forward-the need of the hour is to strengthen democracy not by economies like US and UK but developing countries who have to stregthen their economies in the corner stone of democratic values. There is strong need to combact the forces trying to create a hegemonic framework but multilateral framework.

The main characteristics of democracy is the right of the people to choose their representative, to take active participation, right to equality and most imp. protection of human rights.
But in recent times, threats to the democracies of the world are rising due to several factors like —
1) HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATION

International terrorist network is now a well established fact. With increased destruction power they seek to destabilise and undermine democratic values.
4) POLITICALLY MOTIVATED INTERNET SHUTDOWNS
*In India, shutdown of internet during Ayodhya verdict, Repeal of Art. 370 , Farm bills, etc to stop the circulation of fake news and misinformation is a direct intervention to the Right of human to free speech and expression plus Right to information.
5) MANIPULATION OF INFORMATION
* infodemic during Covid 19 pandemic.
6)ONLINE HARMS.
7)CYBER ATTACKS
* stuxnet, GhostNet, stuckfly.
8)ECONOMIC COERCION.
9)CORRUPTION.
10)RISING AUTHORITARIANISM.
These above mentioned points are the big threat to the world democracies.
WAY FORWARD—
* first define “what is Fake News?”. Then make rules regarding it.
*formation of alliance between people and institution around the world irrespective of ideologies.
*intergovernmental alliance is needed.
* entry of all countries in Budapest Convention to counter cyberattacks.
*counter terrorism.
The global alliance and implemention of above laws could help to get a new democratic world with peace and harmony.

Please Review-;

“A great democracy must be progressive or it will soon cease to be great democracy “-Theodore Roosevelt .

In recent times ,democracies all over the world are facing significant challenges that are creating hindrances in their smooth functioning.

MODERN THREATS -;

1-Corruption and Inefficiency-Nowdays majority of representatives are being corrupt i.e creating lack of trust among citizens and also affecting the democracy.

2-Rising Authoritarianism and Anti social elements – In government, authoritarianism denotes any political system that concentrates power in the hands of a leader or a small elite that is not constitutionally responsible to the body of the people that gave impetus to anti social elements too.

3- Disinformation – Frequent incidents of fake news and propaganda regarding any particular community or party is a serious concern to democracy.

4- Casteism and Communalism- In every corner of world , we are witnessing Caste based violence and persecution of minorities which is a grave danger for democracy.

5- Growing Economic and Social inequalities- As the gap between rich and poor is continuously increasing with leap and bounds , the very essence of equality in democracy is hindering.

6- Terrorism and Violent extremism- Not a single part of world is left which didn’t faced threats from terrorism or extremism.

7- Online harms and Cyber attacks -Misuse of data on social media sites, privacy of users to influence political outcomes and cyber warfare through malicious software to disrupt the economic , political and social order of a nation.

WHAT NEEDS TO BE DONE-;

1- Preserve and strengthen checks and balances on every aspect of democracy.

2-Political leaders and institutions and if necessary international actors must work in collaboration to tackle the problem of terrorism and extremism .

3- Ensure a International Anti corruption agency that will include all the stakeholders and that will take accountability of Corruption related issues.

4-Promote citizen engagement for sustainable accountability and decision-making.

5- A robust Cyber resilience infrastructure is needed from the protection of cyber attacks.

6- Civil society organisations should channel the momentum of increased political participation into initiatives aimed at empowering citizens to demand government accountability.

7- A strong vigilance is required to tackle the human right violation in which every state actors participation is needed.

8- Stricter data protection laws are required to ensure that political leaders do not indulge in practices that indulge influence of voters .

Democracy cannot survive without proper citizen participation and politicians accountability. Hence a positive approach is need of the hour from both the ends.

Democracy is defines as giving freedom to raise his voice against discrimination ,right to be informed ,equality
Threats

Bcoz of lack of education advantage taken by them in voting as they don’t know whom they are voting .used as Increasing there votes by giving bribe in liquor, household from , development promises ,by paying them small money
2 gender discrimination : from the ancient it’s always teach her household his the only duty .today problem faced by women untouchable (during periods), education , fighting for justice (in rape , voilence cases)eg:Saudi Arabia

3castesum and communism :giving seats in election on the basis of caste ,religion (in panchyats ) ,focusing on particular section on the basis of religion. Hapless incidents are ignored note filing cases (in case of dalits ,tribes )
4 growing economic and social problem :from recent 5 yr Increasing trends of changing political parties creating distrust between common people and Increasing gap between poor and rich in India according to survey 10% of the rich people holding 70%of the income and covid make more worst .
5increasing misuse of technologyand social Media :posting fake new for creating havoc ,creating religious differences
6
bitcoins :using for pishing ,ramonwar,by terriosts ..

8
Corruption and inefficiency :corruption is main factor that work as weaking the country

Democracy is based on four pillars like dissent, deliberations, discussions and debate. However maintaining the right balance between those pillars and law and order and public safety is important.
Threats for modern democracies are
1. Authoritarianism
2. Electoral interference – paid news, poll rigging, etc
3. Corruption – black money, bribes, kickbacks
4. Disinformation…infodemic in recent covid pandemic
5. Economic Coercion
5. Cyber attacks…ransomware, phishing, ddos social media nexus with electoral process…fb and cam bridge analitica
6. Politically motivated internet shutdown
7. Human rights violation…Flyod death USA
8. Terrorism, extermism and abuses…India worst hit by terrorism
Need of the hour
1. Bring transparency and accountability..in the system…. Like RTI sec 4 – voluntary disclosure of information by public authority, social audit and citizen charter should be in place.
2. Cyber security should be taken care..Budapest convention…technological solutions like AI, ML, QS
3. International Collaboration to tackle terrorism and extremism…UNSC peace keeping force…Regional organization…RATs of SCO
4. Criminalization of politics should be addressed…India Supreme Court judgement Lilly Thomas judgement..
5. Government should know the difference between the dissent and incitement to violence…dissent, criticism should not be punished..IPC sec 124A sedition law should be used limited manner.
Awareness among the people becomes most important…. Right from choosing right representative to being vocal about the issues they face…same time government should be responsible to people…laws should be passed after right deliberations and discussions. Checks and balances between the organs of the democracies and avoid concentration of power in any one hand.

Democracy is the govt of the people for people the and by the people, but In modern times it is facing several challenges from many aspects. almost all the world’s countries having democratic govt except some. in democracy people choose their govt which can fullfill their demands and work for nations interest. but in recent times we have seen many things which are hampering the spirit of true democracy.
there are some points given below to understand the same
1- Autocratic nature of the elected govt:
2- Post poll violence
3- misuse of social media
4- Dual nature of regulating authorities
5-flow of information
6- lack of education
7- extrimism
WAY FORWARD—–
our apex bodies plays a very significant role in maintaining true nature of democracy. all we have to do is that these bodies have to be very coutious when govt or any other institution is doing against spirit of democracy.

Democracy can be defined as rule of the people by the people for the people

Democracies of the world are continuously facing number of modern threats

  1. Seditious charges on the free speech & expression by the state
  2. Terrorism is resurfacing & with renewed vigor – e.g. al-quida, ISIS
  3. Deepfakes in which using AI, things are shown separately from reality & misjudged – which is also threat to democracy
  4. Social media fake news, Cyber crimes, etc
  5. Globalisation – trade wars, loss of domestic identity, etc
  6. issues of regionalism sidelining the notion of nationalism
  7. Democratic state exercising authoritarian power impacting fundamental rights of citizens
  8. EU – the uncertain Brexit will further damage the prospects of both UK & Europe
  9. USA – despite being the oldest democracy, experiencing internal rivalries along with impeachment of the president
  10. Russia – Threat to demo. has been very visible in Russia, as what they done with Ukraine & Crimea
  11. France – new version of secularism & free speech has emerged which is becoming cause for terrorism e.g. teacher Charlie Hebdo’s murder
  12. India – India’s Liberal Democracy Index has reduced to 0.36
  13. issues like CAA, NRC,
  14. communal violence, vote bank politics,
  15. Criminalisation of politics, etc

Measures to overcome these challenges –>

  1. Adherence to rule of law & constitutional morality by each democracy
  2. fundamental rights & liberty of citizens should not compromised for political gain
  3. Strong co-operation among nation states to combat terrorism
  4. Preserving the domestic cultural interests in the era of globalisation
  5. Strict surveillance & regulation to deal with cyber crimes impacting national sovereignty
  6. balanced regional development & recognising regional aspiration only if they are within constitutional framework
  7. strengthening institutional checks & balances system to counter legislative tyrannies, caste politics, criminalisation of politics, etc e.g. Judiciary, ECI
  8. Promoting sustainable & inclusive growth

…… suggestions are welcome
