IMO in a pursuit to solve the Red Sea Crisis: -

Yemen's Houthi rebels, supported by Iran, have launched dozens of attacks against ships in the Red Sea, targeting boats headed for Israel in an act of "solidarity" with inhabitants of the Gaza Strip.

All about IMO: - The IMO is a specialized agency of the United Nations (UN) that is responsible for regulating shipping and preventing marine pollution from ships.

  • IMO was established in 1948 following a UN conference in Geneva and came into existence in 1958.

  • Members:

  • IMO has 175 Member States and three Associate Members, and its headquarters are in London, United Kingdom.

  • India joined the IMO in 1959.

  • Role:

  • Its main role is to create a regulatory frameworkfor the shipping industry that is fair and effective, universally adopted and universally implemented.

  • It is also involved in legal matters, includingliability and compensation issues and thefacilitation of international maritime traffic.

  • IMO celebrates World Maritime Day every last Thursday of September, to highlight the importance of shipping and maritime activities.


2. Great Indian Bustards give Nandyal a miss this year too


The Great Indian Bustard (GIB) has not put in its annual appearance this year too at the Rollapadu Wildlife Sanctuary in Nandyal district of Andhra Pradesh and its surrounding areas.


About GIB: -

The GIB, which grows to about a metre in height, to a weight of about 15 kg, is designated as “critically endangered” on the red list of the International Union for Conservation of Nature.


The Great Indian Bustard (Ardeotis nigriceps) , the State bird of Rajasthan.


  • The bird is under constant threats due to collision/electrocution with power transmission lines, hunting (still prevalent in Pakistan), habitat loss and alteration as a result of widespread agricultural expansion, etc.

Conservation Breeding Facility:

  • MoEF&CC, Rajasthan government and Wildlife Institute of India (WII) have also established a conservation breeding facility in Desert National Park at Jaisalmer in June 2019.


3. Brumation


This is the name to describe a period of dormancy or slowed activity in reptiles, much like hibernation in mammals.


It typically occurs during colder months, when temperatures drop and food becomes scarce. Reptiles enter a state of brumation to conserve energy and survive these adverse environmental conditions.


During brumation, reptiles may retreat to underground burrows, rock crevices or other sheltered areas where temperatures are relatively more stable.


Their metabolism slows significantly, allowing them to go weeks or even months without eating.

SFIO is a multi-disciplinary organization under the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, consisting of experts in the field of accountancy, forensic auditing, law, information technology, investigation, company law, capital market and taxation for detecting and prosecuting or recommending for prosecution white-collar crimes/frauds.


It has its head office in New Delhi.


The Computer Forensic and Data Mining Laboratory (CFDML) was set up in 2013 to provide support and service to the officers of SFIO in their investigations.


SFIO is headed by a Director as Head of Department in the rank of Joint Secretary to the Government of India.


Serious Fraud investigation (SFIO) was initially set up by the Government of India by way of a resolution dated 2nd July, 2003. At that time SFIO did not enjoy a formal legal status.


Function and Roles:

Section 211 of the Companies Act, 2013, has accorded statutory status to the Serious Fraud Investigation Office (SFIO).


SFIO also has powers to arrest people for the violation of the Company law.
