India saw a significant number of new species discoveries in 2023 according to data released by the Union Environment Minister.

Total New Species: 641 (442 entirely new to science and 199 newly recorded in India)
New Plant Species: 339 (171 entirely new to science and 168 new to India)
Curcuma kakchingense (turmeric) - Manipur
Asystasia venui (flowering plant) - West Bengal
New Animal Species: 302 (most from southern India)
Capra himalayensis (Himalayan Ibex) - distinct species confirmation
Miniopterus srinii (bent-winged bat) - Karnataka
New Fauna Discoveries: Mostly invertebrates (564) with 77 vertebrates (mostly fish)
